The longest walkable and best-preserved timber flume in Norway has become the number 1 hike in Southern Norway. The adventure combines a nature walk, a waffle break and facts about life in Norway when electricity was a new-fangled thing. Built into the mountainside is the modern power plant Steinsfossen that
originally required a flume to be built for the transportation of timber.
Follow this timber flume through the forest and past creeks until you arrive at Paulen Farm for a waffle break. The farmstead originated in the 17th century and is currently a scout campsite. It was once the home of the steam engine railroad conductor for the Setesdalsbanen railroad you see along the trail.
The flume continues across the river before arriving at the impressive man-made dam construction leading to the remnants of the historic Kringsjå power plant. Retrace your footsteps and return to the timber flume in the other direction.
